Title: Basic Discovery and Society
Fundamental or basic science has an essential role in the health and well being of individuals, societies and nations. Scientific discoveries lead to advances in agriculture, medicine and industry. The challenge is to foster a vigorous basic science enterprise while at the same time supporting an ecosystem that develops these discoveries into new technologies.
Dr. Schaal is the Mary Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor in Arts and Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at Washington University. She is a plant evolutionary biologist who uses DNA sequences and genomics to understand evolutionary processes such as gene flow, geographical differentiation, and the domestication of crop species. Her most recent work focuses on the evolutionary genomics of rice.
