Demonstrations and the Crucial Human Side of Science

We will use some simple and fun physics demonstrations to help us reflect a bit on how science, engineering, and mathematics (so-called STEM) are actually done. No big surprise: it involves human beings, while we sometimes seem to almost ignore that in the midst of the academic silos that separate students, faculty, and regular folks at home!  Please come prepared to smile and celebrate, as we reflect on the precious, but very human, nature of STEM in our world.

Dick Peterson received his Ph.D. in physics at Michigan State followed by postdoctoral and several summer positions in optical plasma diagnostics in the Physics Division at Los Alamos National Lab. Since coming to Bethel University, he has worked with colleagues and students in developing new methods for fast interferometric and holographic measurements of all sorts. He received the American Physical Society's (APS) prize for outstanding research at an undergraduate school and elected a Fellow of the APS in 2005. He was elected to serve in 2003-2007 in the Presidential track of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). In 2010 the Optical Society of America (OSA) recognized him as a Senior Member for professional work and service in optics and photonics, and he has served as a Traveling Lecturer for the OSA. He especially enjoys the development of new apparatus for interactive physics demonstrations and labs and has shared these demonstrations globally with young and old.
